Your business has been hacked. What should you do?

In today’s digital world, a cyberattack can happen to any organization — from a large bank to a small startup.

Small and medium-sized enterprises remain particularly vulnerable, and they make up the majority of businesses in Kyrgyzstan and across Central Asia. Limited budgets and a shortage of cybersecurity professionals often make them easy targets for attackers.

What to do in case of a cyberattack?

The main rule is to act quickly and systematically — every minute of delay can increase the damage.

Identify what happened.
Determine the nature of the incident: phishing, malware, ransomware, or a data breach. This will help you choose the right response measures.

Contain the threat.
Immediately change passwords, disconnect infected devices from the network, and if necessary, suspend access to systems.

Notify all affected parties.
Clients and partners should be informed of potential risks. Transparency builds trust and helps minimize reputational damage.

Conduct an investigation.
Identify the source of the attack, assess the scale of the damage, and eliminate vulnerabilities. In serious cases, it is important to report the incident to the relevant state authorities.

Restore protection.
Review your security system: update software, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA), and implement an incident response plan for the future.

The situation in the region

In Kyrgyzstan and other Central Asian countries, only a few companies currently have clear cyber incident response plans. This makes them especially vulnerable, and the consequences of attacks can be critical — both for the organizations themselves and their clients.

How the Digital Resilience Association helps

The Association supports businesses and organizations in strengthening their cyber resilience by:

  • developing and implementing incident response plans;
  • conducting cybersecurity audits and trainings;
  • creating a platform for knowledge exchange and sharing best practices among experts.
