International Literacy Day: Cybersecurity Mentoring as a New Form of Literacy

September 8 – International Literacy Day

Around the world, September 8 is celebrated as International Literacy Day. Today, literacy means more than just the ability to read and write. In the 21st century, it also includes digital literacy — the ability to navigate the internet, protect personal data, and withstand cyber threats.

One of the most effective tools for spreading knowledge is mentorship in cybersecurity. When experienced users support beginners — children, teenagers, colleagues, or the older generation — it helps build a culture of responsible behavior in the digital environment.

How to Be a Cyber Mentor

  • Lead by example. Use strong passwords, enable two-factor authentication, verify your sources.
  • Keep it simple. Translate terms like “phishing” or “encryption” into real-life examples.
  • Provide support. Create a safe environment where questions can be asked without fear.
  • Share resources. Recommend trusted articles, checklists, and online courses.
  • Encourage curiosity. Let people learn through questions and experimentation.

Why It Matters for Kyrgyzstan

  • Schoolchildren and students. Young people often underestimate risks; mentorship helps them avoid online fraud.
  • Labor migrants and their families. They are frequent targets of phone and online scams; mentors can teach them to verify sources and remain cautious.
  • Businesses and government institutions. Internal mentoring programs reduce the likelihood of employee mistakes and minimize the risk of cyberattacks.

On International Literacy Day, we emphasize: literacy today means being able to live safely in the digital world.

Cybersecurity mentorship is not just about sharing knowledge — it is a contribution to building a more resilient society where everyone feels protected.

The Digital Resilience Association calls for collective action: let us share knowledge, support one another, and build together a safe digital future for Kyrgyzstan.
